Scottsdale Healthcare Shea
Medical Center

Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center is the only hospital in the Greater Phoenix area to earn the 2009 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks Award, which recognizes facilities that deliver high-quality, efficient care.

The 433-bed medical center boasts the elite Magnet hospital designation, awarded to the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for quality nursing care. What started as a small hospital on the outskirts of Scottsdale in 1984 is now a thriving medical and research center in the heart of the city.

Located near Loop 101 and Shea Boulevard, today the hospital serves a highly populated area. Scottsdale Healthcare Shea’s ongoing evolution meets the community’s current health needs and prepares for the challenges of an aging population.

Services include an emergency department with the northeast valley’s only dedicated Pediatric ER; a certified chest pain center and heart attack center, bariatric surgery center of excellence, total joint replacement center, cardiology, oncology, Level III Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, pediatrics and women's services.

The Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, is located on the Shea campus and houses the Scottsdale Healthcare Research Institute. The cancer center offers groundbreaking cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and support services, attracting patients from across Arizona and the U.S.

Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks Award winners were selected based on publicly available data on patient outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, efficiency, financial stability and other measures of hospital performance.

According to Thomson Reuters, having a 100 Top Hospitals award winner in the community means that:

  • Patients are measurably less likely to have a complication or adverse patient safety event, or be readmitted to the hospital.
  • Patients are more likely to receive care efficiently at a reasonable comparative cost.
  • The community can rely on the hospital as a well-managed major employer that will continue to invest in newer technology and services the community needs.
