Turning the table on a traumatic injury

Robert Jeffery

Robert JefferyJust days before running in the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon for the sixth time, Robert Jeffery was involved in a serious automobile accident.

Pinned against the dashboard, his left hip socket and the tibia or shin bone of his right leg were fractured and poking through his skin.

With the severity of his injuries, you might think that involvement in athletic activities would become a thing of the past for Robert, an energetic Valley resident in his mid-50s.

But that’s not the case.

After the accident, Robert was airlifted to the Level 1 Trauma Center at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center. He underwent two surgeries during which orthopedic trauma specialist Brian Miller, MD placed a metal rod-type device in Robert’s leg and used a metal plate and nine medical “screws” to repair his hip.

Today, Robert is an enthusiastic bicycler and occasional hiker. He recently ran the 4-mile Pat Tillman race.

“Everyone at Scottsdale Healthcare was excellent. From Dr. Miller and the operating room to people in physical therapy, who were very motivational,” says Robert. “I was treated great and I really appreciate that.”
