Neonatal ICU at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center Awarded State’s Top Designation

Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center is proud to announce that the Northeast Valley’s most critically ill newborns and mothers-to-be with high-risk pregnancies can now receive care closer to home.

Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was awarded Level III designation. Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center is the only hospital in the Northeast Valley to earn this designation, which is the state’s highest level of certification to care for critically ill newborns and high-risk pregnancies. We received the designation after completing a rigorous survey and evaluation by the Arizona Perinatal Trust.

Level III designation means that our NICU can now provide the most advanced care for all newborns of any gestational age and offer care for mothers with high-risk pregnancies. (Our NICU has already cared for babies as small as 460 grams, 25 weeks gestation and as young as 24 weeks gestation and weighing 700 grams.)

“Premature and critically ill babies who need special care, and their parents, can stay close to home in the Northeast Valley. We can meet their complex needs right within our hospital,” said Polly Hrenchir, clinical director for Women’s Services.

The 24-bed Level III NICU maintains state-of-the-art equipment and is staffed by neonatologists (physicians who take care of premature babies or sick infants), neonatal nurse practitioners, specially trained nurses and respiratory professionals who provide 24-hour in-hospital coverage for infants and families who require advanced care.

Ensuring we can meet the healthcare needs of our youngest patients, Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center also offers pediatric surgical capabilities including orthopedic, general, urology, ear, nose and throat, cardiac, and gastrointestinal surgeons. Pediatric anesthesiologists are available 24/7.

“It is a pleasure to work with a staff and an administration dedicated to the patient first and that provides all resources necessary to really build a Level III NICU the ‘right way,” said Scottsdale Healthcare Neonatology Medical Director Peter Stevenson, MD.

Importantly, our NICU has family-friendly policies that allow parents and families to remain close to their newborns.
