Providing a Comprehensive, Personalized Approach to Your Rehabilitation

Hand Therapy

Hand TherapyProblems of the upper extremities can affect all aspects of a person’s function and quality of life. Handwriting, greeting people and shaking their hands, self-care such as eating, dressing, or grooming can all be impacted. Using a computer or playing a musical instrument, opening jars or turning a key in the ignition may be difficult or impossible to perform.

Hand therapy is a specialized area of rehabilitation that focuses on problems of the upper extremity. Diagnoses treated include fractures of the upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand; lacerations of tendons or nerves; crush injuries; pain syndromes; osteoarthritis; rheumatoid arthritis; tendonitis such as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, or trigger finger; dog, cat, or spider bites; Dupuytren’s release; amputations; strains or sprains; or nerve entrapments/neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome.

Scottsdale Healthcare has full-time certified hand therapists at the Osborn and Shea campuses. Our hand therapy approach is patient-centered with one-on-one care. Treatments include custom splinting, manual therapy, physical agent modalities, range of motion, tendon gliding, nerve gliding, desensitization, sensory re-education, activities of daily living with assistive devices and adaptive strategies, strengthening, patient education, and home exercise programs.
