Mark Burks

Mark BurksAs a Phoenix firefighter, Mark Burks couldn’t have a more demanding job. Coupled with his active, high-energy lifestyle, he always was on the move. That was until 2005, when his life changed following an accident at his home.

Mark, now 55 years old, was on a ladder about 20 feet high cutting tree limbs with a chainsaw. The limb his ladder was leaning against snapped, sending him to the ground. Amazingly, he was able to land on his feet, but the impact of the fall shattered his left calcaneus (heel). Mark would find himself in even more pain three years later when the original trauma of his accident would cause him to have his right hip completely replaced.

Dr. Joseph Longo, board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction surgery, performed both of Mark’s procedures. Dr. Longo is active in clinical research involving implant design and surgical implantation techniques for trauma and adult reconstruction – exactly the qualifications Mark was looking for when making his decision about his care provider.

“Dr. Longo and his staff are genuinely nice, professional people who treat you like family,” Mark said. “Everyone at Scottsdale Healthcare’s Osborn Medical Center did more than I expected. It was obvious they truly cared how I was doing, and did everything they could to make my stay in the hospital more comfortable.”

Mark’s biggest challenge following his surgeries was being patient during the recovery period. He learned to listen to his physical therapists and not rush his progress. After three months of light duty, he was recently cleared to return to work at the firehouse on full duty. He’s able to perform all of the physical tasks related to his job without the pain he experienced prior to his foot and hip surgeries.

“I’ve told my friends and family many times that Dr. Longo and his staff at Scottsdale Healthcare have given me my career back,” he said. “They’ve also enabled me to be the active husband and father that I used to be before I was hurt, and that part I love even more! How can you thank them for a gift like that?”
