Dr. Adrienne Frazer

Dr. Adrienne FrazerAs a respected chiropractor in Scottsdale, Ariz., Dr. Adrienne Frazer has dedicated her life to helping and healing her patients. Following a series of automobile accidents over the years, she finally decided to address her own pain and have double hip replacement surgery.

In two separate accidents, first as a driver and then as a passenger, seatbelt impact left Adrienne with injuries to both hips. After a third collision in November 2009, she needed the assistance of a walker to accomplish the simplest of tasks. It was then that she contacted Dr. Ted Firestone, orthopedic surgeon at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center.

There are two ways for a surgeon to perform hip replacement surgery. The first, more traditional way, is from the side of the hip, which involves cutting the muscles. The second is a newer method of surgery performed from the front of the hip(anterior hip), which doesn’t involve cutting any muscle at all. After thoroughly researching these two options, Adrienne decided to have the procedure done from the front, which also offers the benefit of a much quicker recovery time.

On Dec. 9, 2009, Dr. Firestone performed the operation. Three-and-a-half short weeks later, Adrienne was back to work without the walker, easing the pain of her own patients.

“The care I received from Dr. Firestone and his team was top notch,” Adrienne said. “I couldn’t have had a better experience. Everyone I encountered at Scottsdale Healthcare was helpful, very knowledgeable, caring and just really great!”

For almost two years prior to her surgery, Adrienne was very limited in what she could do. Even simple movement was painful. Her work was painful and her two favorite hobbies, hiking and photography, had to be put on the back burner. She also is a singer in the Baha’i Choir, and traveling by plane to international choir events became more and more difficult.

Months later, Adrienne says the procedure has changed her life – both physically and psychologically. Her rehabilitation regimen consists of exercise and participating in the Egoscue Method three-to-five days a week. The Egoscue Method involves a series of stretches and body positioning designed to strengthen the muscles and bring the body back to its proper alignment.

Her friends tell her that the strain is gone from her face and that she actually looks younger. Even more impressive, Adrienne is now an inch taller because of the prosthetic hip replacements! She recently completed a 2.5 mile hike and makes it a point to get out and walk every day. Her long-term goals are to participate in yoga classes, take even longer hikes and achieve a high level of overall fitness.

Adrienne’s advice to anyone contemplating a hip replacement procedure is simple, “Trust the process and change your life for the better. Hindsight is 20/20; I only wish I would have done it sooner. Speak with someone who has been there before – I did. Go for it!”
