Sarcoma is cancer of the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels or other connective or supportive tissue in the body. The Sarcoma Center of Excellence at Scottsdale Healthcare’s Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center is one of the few in the nation that specializes in treating sarcoma. With a collaboration of bone and soft tissue cancer specialists and researchers, the Sarcoma Center of Excellence uses a team approach for care and treatment, which includes adult medical oncology, surgery, pathology, diagnostic radiology, orthopedic oncology, radiotherapy and reconstructive surgery.
Our diagnostic radiologist and pathologist define the tumor location, diagnosis and staging of the disease, and our surgical, medical and radiation oncologists work together to design a treatment plan specially designed for the individual patient. We also draw on the skills of our supporting staff including genetic counseling, social work, rehabilitation, nutrition and pain management if necessary.
This comprehensive and personalized treatment planning is crucial to the successful management of the disease in our sarcoma patients.
