Dr. Gavin Levinthal is a staff gastroenterologist at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital. Board certified in gastroenterology, hepatology and internal medicine, he has practiced privately in the Valley since 2003 and has been with the Thompson Peak hospital since 2008. A native of South Africa, Dr. Levinthal received his medical degree (MBBCh) from the University of The Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He completed his internship and residency in South Africa before coming to the United States as an internal medicine resident at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Later he became chief resident in internal medicine and was a gastroenterology fellow at both Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Metrohealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Dr. Levinthal was a staff gastroenterologist at the Maurice and Sadie Friedman Center for Digestive and Liver Disorders at Mt. Sinai, director of the G.I. laboratory at the facility, and an instructor at case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In addition, he was on staff with the Department of Gastroenterology, Division of Medicine, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and the Transplantation Center, Division of Surgery, at the Foundation.

Dr. Stuart Triester has been a gastroenterologist on staff at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital since 2008. He came to Arizona following seven years in Bellevue, WA as both a gastroenterologist in private practice and as a hospitalist physician with the Overlake Hospital Medical Center. He earned a BS (Magna Cum Laude) in biology at Tufts University in Medford, MA and his medical degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. His internal medicine residency was served at the University of Washington in Seattle and his fellowship in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. He is board certified in gastroenterology and hepatology.

A practicing gastroenterologist in Scottsdale since 1985, Dr. Jay Mellen, a board certified physician, joined the staff of Scottsdale Healthcare Gastroenterology & Endoscopy in early 2009. He previously was in private practice for many years with Leon A. Rigberg, M.D. 

A graduate of Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY, Dr. Mellen earned his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. He served his internship, residency and chief residency in internal medicine at City Hospital Center in Elmhusrt, NY, part of the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine at City University of New York. Dr Mellen completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Brown University’s Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Dr Mellen was an assistant instructor in Medicine at Brown University, a teaching fellow in medicine at the Rhode Island Hospital, and an assistant in medicine at Mt. Sinai during his medical training. In addition to his involvement with Scottsdale Healthcare, Dr. Mellen was Chief of Staff for five years at Phoenix Memorial Hospital, where he chaired several medical committees in the 1990s.

Dr. Leon Rigberg has been in private practice in gastroenterology in the Valley since 1976 and in Scottsdale since 1982. He joined the staff of Scottsdale Healthcare Gastroenterology & Endoscopy in early 2009. He is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine and is trained in all endoscopic procedures including ERCP, esophageal motility studies and hepatology. A graduate of Albright College in Reading, PA, Dr. Rigberg earned his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. His internship was at Philadelphia General Hospital and his medical residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. He served as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps prior to completing his gastroenterology fellowship at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami, FL. Prior to moving to Arizona, he was in private practice in Allentown, PA for two years. Dr. Rigberg has chaired the Endoscopy Committee for Scottsdale Healthcare hospitals since 2005. He also served as Chief of the Gastroenterology Department at Phoenix Memorial Hospital for 10 years until 1986.

Akshay Shah, MD is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. Devoted to patient care and therapeutic endoscopy. Dr. Shah’s interests include hepatology, gastrointestinal oncology and pancreatobiliary diseases. After receiving an undergraduate degree in chemistry, Dr. Shah earned his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where he was awarded an international fellowship grant as well as a memorial scholarship. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Brown University in Rhode Island, where he was honored for Excellence in Consultative Medicine, and his fellowship in gastroenterology at an affiliate of Columbia University in New York. He did additional training at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in transplant hepatology. Dr. Shah, who has been involved in several gastroenterology research projects, is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
