Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y is considered the gold standard of weight loss surgery by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and the National Institutes of Health. Gastric Bypass is the most common form of weight-loss surgery, gastric bypass can help patients lose up to 87 percent of their excess weight at two years and maintain at least 68 percent average weight loss for years post-surgery. Now with refinements to the operation, many patients are able to lose 85-100% of their excess weight and keep it off long-term.
What is Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Laparoscopic gastric bypass involves dividing the stomach with staples by creating a small pouch to reduce the amount of food that can be eaten. The small intestine is divided and brought up to the new “pouch” so food moves directly from the pouch to the middle of the intestine without assistance from normal digestive juices.
The smaller stomach pouch creates a sense of fullness quickly so the patient does not eat a large amount of food and down not feel the need to eat more. Most of the weight loss from gastric bypass occurs during the first years after surgery.
