Heuser Family Medicine Center
The innovative Heuser Family Medicine Center provides a setting for residents to
develop a practice that provides continuing comprehensive family health care.
Residents belong to patient care teams that emphasize and facilitate continuity of
care. First year residents spend one or two half days per week seeing continuity patients.
Second year residents spend two to three half days per week at the Center, and
third year residents spend three to four half days per week there. Residents are
exposed to the practical aspects of medicine during their time at the Center. Specific
areas of focus include managed care, financial systems, billing, patient flow, scheduling, and
personnel issues in order to prepare residents for "real world" practice upon
their graduation from our program.
The Heuser Family Medicine Center is a high-tech 12,000 square foot office
adjacent to the hospital. The Center has 18 exam rooms, 3 procedure rooms and a
laboratory. Special equipment includes a cardiac treadmill, flexible sigmoidoscope,
LEEP machine, colposcope, nasopharyngoscope, OB ultrasound, EKG machine, pulmonary
function testing, hearing booth, slit lamp, and non-contact tonometer. Ready access
to radiologic services is located within our medical office complex.
Our residents are exposed to a very diverse patient population at the Heuser Family Medicine Center. Pediatric patients comprise 25% of our outpatient office visits, while patients over 65 years of age comprise 20% of our outpatient office visits. Our residents gain extensive experience and skills in caring for the underserved. Forty percent of our outpatient office visits are dedicated to providing care to these individuals and their families.
Educational Resources
We are excited about the acquisition and implementation of our innovative, state-of-the-art electronic medical record, NextGen. Our residents and faculty enjoy the versatility of remote access to the electronic medical record, as well as the availability of tablet computers for use during clinical encounters.
An extensive Residency library contains textbooks, journals, CDs/videotapes and the American College of Radiology Learning File. Multimedia computers are available with instructional programs, medical decision-making tools, and patient education programs.
PersonnelWe are proud of our highly skilled, professional,
well-trained staff at the Heuser Family Medicine Center. The residents enjoy
collegial working relationships with nursing, clinical, and office staff on a daily basis.
The entire staff participates in residency-wide potluck lunches, holiday parties,
picnics, orientation, and graduation activities.
