Genetic Risk / Cancer Screening
Hereditary cancer accounts for approximately 5 to 10 percent of all cancer cases. The Virginia G.
Piper Cancer Center offers genetic risk assessment for individuals at increased chance of developing
hereditary cancers. Cancer screening and follow-up services are also provided, with patient support
through a Genetic Counselor and an Advanced Practice Nurse.
Services include:
- Hereditary cancer risk assessment and education
- Pre- and post-test genetic counseling
- Facilitation of genetic testing
- Individualized cancer risk management options and
recommendations
- Psychosocial counseling and support services
- Patient and/or family and community education regarding cancer genetics
Completing and evaluating a family history (antecedentes familiares en espaņol) is key in determining a person's risk for hereditary
cancer. If you answer yes to any of these questions, please consider further evaluation at the Cancer
Genetic Risk Assessment and Cancer Prevention program:
- Have two or more of your close blood relatives had cancer?
- Has the same type of cancer occurred in more than one relative on the same side of the family?
- Has any individual in your family had more than one type of cancer?
- Has cancer been diagnosed in a family member under 50 years of age?
- Has a rare cancer or tumor occurred in an individual or several individuals within your family?
- Have two or more separate tumors occurred in the same organ in any family member (for
example, breast cancer in both breasts)?
