Providing a Comprehensive, Personalized Approach to Your Rehabilitation

Parkinson's Therapy

LSVT® LOUD & LSVT® BIG

Scottsdale Healthcare Outpatient Therapy Services provides a comprehensive, personalized approach to the rehabilitation of patients with Parkinson’s disease. Scottsdale Healthcare utilizes a multidisciplinary team of physical and occupational therapists who have received specialized certification in LSVT® BIG and speech therapists have received specialized certification in LSVT® LOUD.

LSVT® BIG

Scientific research suggests that individuals with Parkinson’s disease should not wait until they begin to experience disability, impaired function or loss of balance before they begin to exercise. LSVT® BIG techniques include intensive physical and occupational therapy focused on training individuals to use an internal cueing strategy (self monitoring) for better movements. These strategies lead to faster walking with bigger steps, better balance and increased flexibility of the trunk.

LSVT® BIG is a standardized exercise prescription that adheres to principles of practice promoting strength, motor learning and changes in brain function. Using the LSVT® BIG principles, the physical and occupational therapists teach patients to avoid inactivity by incorporating the BIG exercises into everyday movement activities which will help improve your quality of life.  You control the movements; you don’t let the movements control you!

LSVT LOUD:

Common speech problems that individuals with Parkinson’s disease may encounter include soft voice, mumbled speech, monotone speech and hoarse voice. Research has demonstrated the effects of the LSVT® LOUD program can last up to two years and results in improved loudness, speech intelligibility, facial expression, and brain function. LSVT® LOUD has been identified as the “gold standard” in treating speech disorders for individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

LSVT® BIG and LOUD Programs are:

  • 16 individual 1-hour therapy sessions, 4 times/week for 4 weeks.
  • High Effort, Continuous Activity– multiple repetitions of whole body, size and quality of movements, functional movements of limbs and voice incorporated into daily situations.
  • Progressive – moves from simple to more complex functional movements
  • Motivating – therapists reinforce success with positive feedback and teach self-monitoring.

Recent research shows exercise may slow, halt, or reverse the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Regular follow up treatment with our certified therapists are recommended every 3-6 months to sustain motivation, adherence to home exercise programs, and increase community participation.

For the best results, it is essential that LSVT® BIG and LSVT® Loud treatments are delivered by a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist certified in this method. Scottsdale Healthcare offers this program at our Osborn and Shea Outpatient Therapy Services Clinics.
