Preparing your Child for Surgery
If your child is scheduled for surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare, you can rest assured that your little one is in the best hands. We have specialized pediatric anesthesia physicians, pediatric general surgeons and a full complement of pediatric surgery Sub specialists. Because surgery can be a stressful time for parents and kids, Scottsdale Healthcare offers pre-surgery tours for patients and families. Tours can help answer questions and prepare children of all ages for their surgery in a fun and educational way. Tours are generally offered on Saturday mornings and children ages 2-17 are encouraged to attend. Tours are led by Certified Child Life Specialists.
We have found this program to be of great value in reducing apprehension, not only in children but also for the family members and friend as well. In fact, children who attend hospital tours experience fewer problems in treatment and quicker recoveries as a result. This is true for children of all ages, from two year-olds to teenagers. Parents of infants will also benefit and often feel reassured when they hear about the surgical process.
For the younger child, we offer “medical play” in which the child can examine and touch the equipment he/she will see in the hospital. Explanations of the child’s procedure are presented with pictures to facilitate understanding. The Pre-admission Hospital program is the best way to prepare your child for a hospital stay. Brothers, sisters, grandparents are welcome. They will all benefit from the experience.
