Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery
While surgery generally is the most effective way to treat heart disorders, traditional open surgery has a number of inherent drawbacks. Splitting of the breastbone leads to a lengthy recovery time of eight to 12 weeks, as well as a prolonged delay before you can return to normal activities.
The daVinci Surgical System provides surgeons and patients with what may be the most effective, least invasive treatment alternative for even the most complex cardiothoracic procedures such as mitral valve repair. Among the benefits of daVinci cardiothoracic surgery are a reduced risk of infection, less blood loss and need for blood transfusions, a shorter hospital stay, less pain and scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activities.
Heart bypass surgery creates a new route, called a bypass, for blood and oxygen to reach your heart. Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries that lead to your heart are partially or totally blocked, preventing your heart from getting the blood it needs. Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass can be done without stopping the heart and putting a patient on a heart-lung machine.
Coronary artery disease varies from person to person, so the way it is diagnosed and treated also will vary. Heart bypass surgery is just one treatment. It may be right for some people, but not for others. Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass may be used when only one or two coronary arteries need a bypass and they are located near the front of the heart.
Some people report memory loss, loss of mental clarity or "fuzzy thinking" following heart surgery. This symptom is less common in people who have minimally invasive coronary artery bypass than in people who have open coronary bypass.
