Pre-Diabetes Education Program
Before developing Type 2 diabetes, you will pass through a period of time when you have "pre-diabetes". That is, your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. There are 57 million people in the United States, 20 yrs. and older, with pre-diabetes. Recent research shows that some long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during this pre-diabetes phase.
But there is good news. If you are diagnosed with pre-diabetes, you have the opportunity to reverse the progression to diabetes. Research shows that if you take action to manage your blood glucose when you have pre-diabetes, you can delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes from developing. In fact, your risk of getting diabetes can be reduced by 58% with modest (5-10% of body weight) weight loss, making healthier food choices, practicing portion control and increasing physical activity. A healthier lifestyle lowers diabetes risk by decreasing the glucose load on the pancreas as well as decreasing insulin resistance which allows the body’s cells to use insulin more efficiently.
