Outpatient Diabetes Education Program
A Comprehensive Approach to Diabetes Management for Children and Adults
The Diabetes Center provides patient-centered learning for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and pre-diabetes. We offer individual consultations and classes for adults and children in all aspects of diabetes including insulin pumps. Our focus is on life-style modifications for healthy living as well as providing tools required for successfully managing diabetes to prevent complications and improve health.
We believe our program is unique. Our focus is helping patients make the behavior changes and learn the management techniques to not only understand how to interpret their blood glucose patterns (highs and lows) but to help them learn to control their blood glucose, lower their A1c results, and meet their glucose and other diabetes goals. Because of Scottsdale Healthcare’s comprehensive inpatient diabetes program, the combined staff is able to provide improved coordination of care between the patient’s hospital stay and their outpatient care to support the needs of the patients and their physicians. The comprehensiveness of the program is highly valued by the hospital staff and physicians who refer their patients.
Diabetes Educational Classes:
Scottsdale Healthcare Diabetes Center offers a variety of diabetes education classes.
Class topics for diabetes and pre-diabetes include:
- Understanding diabetes (pathophysiology)
- Stress management
- Diabetes signs and symptoms
- Treatment for hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels)
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Meal and medication management
- Carbohydrate counting and label reading
- Activity and exercise options
- Standards of care for keeping healthy and reducing complications
- Stress management and blood sugar control
- Behavior changes and goal setting
Class topics for Gestational diabetes include:
- Understanding gestational diabetes
- Meal planning and management
- Blood glucose management
- Ketone testing
Individual consultations with certified diabetes educators (Registered Nurses and Dietitians) include (but are not limited to) the following topics:
- Insulin administration
- Carbohydrate counting and label reading
- Nutrition counseling and weight management
- Meal planning
- Healthy eating strategies for better health and/or weight loss
- Blood glucose meter instruction
- Insulin pump therapy
- Intensive insulin management
Who Can Benefit?
The Center is an excellent resource for people with diabetes at any stage, whether newly diagnosed or previously diagnosed but having trouble reaching their blood glucose goal. It is also an excellent resource for individuals looking for a “refresher” of their diabetes knowledge and skills.

The Diabetes Center runs a Diabetes Lecture Series the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Scottsdale location with physicians and other clinicians providing up-to-date information for the people with or interested in topics that are related to the care and understanding of diabetes. There is no charge for these monthly meetings.
