daVinci Robotic Surgery 

Initially performed in such areas as orthopedics and gynecology, minimally invasive procedures are increasingly available across a broad spectrum of medical specialties, including oncology. 

Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center was the first hospital in Arizona to use the daVinci Surgical System, the world’s most technically advanced surgical robot, and several surgeons at Scottsdale Healthcare Hospitals are now using the daVinci Surgical System to perform cancer surgeries. 

How the daVinci Surgical System works 

The daVinci Robot has arms with surgical instruments attached. The instruments are placed through small incisions in the body and operated by a physician using a 3-D magnification viewfinder and special computerized controls at a nearby console. The robotic arms’ dexterity reproduces exact movements of the surgeon’s hands, wrists and fingers. 

Advantages of minimally invasive surgery with the daVinci Surgical System 

• Uses miniature instruments that are inserted in the patient through three pencil-diameter-size incisions
• Smaller incisions should help reduce blood loss, post-operative pain and external scarring • Extensive range of motion enables precision suturing, dissection and tissue manipulation • Enables the patient to return to normal physical activity sooner
